The Most Interesting Things About Abia State


-          Abia state was created on the 27th day of August 1991. Most of the area now known as Abia was carved out of Imo State.

-          How did they come about the name? Well, Abia is an abbreviation of four of the state’s densely populated regions: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo.

-          Abia State is fondly referred to, in Igbo, as “Obodo Chineke”, meaning “God’s own state”.

-          The administrative capital of Abia State is Umuahia but its commercial capital remains undoubtedly Aba, where there are several textile, plastic, and cement industries among others.

-          The Ngwa people are the indigenous people of Aba. A people with a proudly rich history and tradition.

-          It is a taboo in Ngwaland to have sexual intercourse in the bush, or to have sex with or get married to close blood relatives.

-          The people value education, no doubt. Aba city alone has well over 90 primary schools.

-          Commercial motorcycles ‘Okada’ grew in popularity and notoriety over the last few years in Abia State. They have, however, been banned in the city of Aba and replaced by commercial tricycles commonly called Keke NAPEP.

-          Enyimba International FC is Aba town’s most popular football club. The Peoples Elephant have, among other honours, won 2 CAF Champions League trophies and 6 Nigerian Premier League titles.

-          17 local government areas (LGAs) make up modern day Abia State.

-          Orji Uzor Kalu became the first Executive Governor of Abia State in the 4th Republic. The multi-millionaire businessman was the people’s choice at the polls and assumed office in 1999.

-          Abia State people are mostly farmers growing countless agricultural produce like rice, yam, cassava, etc. Their most important cash crop, though, is the Oil Palm.

-          Thinking of organising a huge event? Yeah, there’s a 9,000-seater multipurpose International Conference Centre in Umuahia built by Governor T.A Orji to enhance tourism. It has the necessary facilities to host any major local or international event.

-          Seeking to further your education? The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture at Umudike is a Federal institution. There’s state-owned Abia State University located in Uturu, not quite far from the privately owned Gregory University also in Uturu.

-          The people may be predominantly farmers and traders yet Abia is an oil producing state and one of the nine Niger Delta states.

-          Upon creation of Abia state in 1991, her first military administrator was Frank Ajobena.

-          Abia state’s first democratically elected Governor was Ogbonnaya Onu, who only spent about 22months in office.

-          The National War Museum in Umuahia is one of the numerous major tourist attractions that Abia state can boast of.

-          Some of the notable sons and daughters of Abia state include Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Maurice Iwu, Kema Chikwe, Uche Chukwumerije, Ojo Maduekwe.
