It’s the 2014-15 Premier League season and fans are excited. Manchester City fans, no less. On the back of a title-winning season last time out, they can be forgiven for wanting more triumphs and more honours.
GoalDig decided to whet the appetite of the die-hard fans of the Citizens with ten awesome league and European records their favourite club and players may have to match or surpass to record another title triumph.
1. Consecutive league wins
Manchester City have never won consecutive Premier League titles. The Citizens are the defending champions. They edged Liverpool to the title on the final day last term and will need another win this season to rewrite that record.
2. Most league goals
The most league goals ever scored by a Man City player in a single season was 38, a feat achieved by the legendary Tommy Johnson in the 1928-29 season.
An injury-free campaign can see star man, Sergio Aguero, go on another goal-scoring spree to surpass Tommy’s.
3. Most goals in a game
53years ago, Denis Law netted six times in a game against Luton Town. It still stands as the most goals scored by any Manchester City player in a single match. It’s really not beyond the prolific duo of Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero to match that.
4. Most European strikes
Man City are in Europe again! Aguero holds the record for the City player with the most goals scored in European competitions with 13 strikes. Manchester City will look to him to extend that if they are to enjoy a fabulous continental run.
5. Record signing
Having seemingly concluded the signings of Sagna and Fernando, it appears Man City
will not be going past the £38million they paid Athletico Madrid for Sergio Aguero in 2011. But then you never know. City are still eyeing Ezekiel Mangala. The transfer window will close in September, only to re-open in January. Injuries to key men may force Man City to dip hands into their giant wallet.
6. Record home wins
City will have to win all their home games and some to match their home league win record which stands at 20.
7. Most goals overall
Last season, Manchester City recorded 156 goals in all competitions, the most by any City side ever. Man City fans can be forgiven for wanting more.
8. Most clean sheets
In 2010-11 season, Joe Hart kept 29 clean sheets, the most in all competitions for City ever. Facing fierce competition from new man, Willy Caballero, the English man will look to better that record to stay as Man City’s Numero uno.
9. Most manager exit
A dramatic 95/96 season sees the Citizens appoint 3 different managers in Alan Ball, Steve Coppell and Frank Clark.
On the face of recent results, current manager, Manuel Pellegrini is going nowhere anytime soon.
10. Largest derby win
The largest derby victory City has managed over rivals, Manchester United was a 6-1 drubbing in 2011. It was achieved enroute to winning the title.
A similar scoreline would reveal that City are, once again, on the right track.
